Essex County League Division I Winners - 2011

T20 Runners Up 2011

Scintilla Cricket Club based in Barking and Dagenham are proud winners of Essex County Cricket League (ECCL) Division I.  Having entered mainstream cricket competition three years ago Scintilla CC managed to conquer all the respective Divisions of ECCL and will be playing in the Premier Division from 2012.  This season this club has enjoyed even more success.  Club Captain and 1st XI skipper Ahmed Choudhury said “winning a hat-trick of league titles since entering this league is an amazing feeling and the boys thoroughly deserve to play Premier League next season.  It has been a hugely successful season for us in all fronts and my premier batsman Ekram Chowdhury and bowler Rafiur Rahman also managed to be the highest run scorer and wicket taker respectively for the second year running – this is unprecedented stuff.  If you check the league statistics we have several players in the top ten run scorers, wicket takers and catches”.  Delighted with the success, club General Secretary, S M Z Hossain applauded the team and said “our young players take their game very seriously and winning is what they believe in.  Our success is backed up by a strong management committee which has put a lot of time and effort for the club – we want to achieve more as the hunger for success continues.  Our club sponsor SimpleCall Mobile has provided us with much needed funds and at the time of austerity measures in the public purse, we have been well supported by SimpleCall and we are grateful for their sponsorship”.  Ecstatic with the league title club Chairman, Naufal Zamir hailed the success down to players’ commitment, dedication and effort.  He went on to say that it has been a very long season for us but hard work of each an every single member of Scintilla CC have taken to the highest of height – Premier League of ECCL.  I am very proud of how serious our players take their game through their own conduct and performance; it has been a very pleasing campaign this year.  I hope our success continues and it encourages new members to join the club”.   Having won the Division one title on the last day of the league season they were still to play two semi finals: one for league cup; and other being T20.

League Cup and T20 cup 2011

In the end, Asian CC overcame Scintilla in the league cup semi final however, Scintilla reached the finals for the T20 cup beating May and Baker 1st XI in the semi.  The final was against a fantastic and the newly crowned Champions of ECCL Premier Division, Goresbrook CC.  However, the Premier League outfit were pushed all the way in the final and Goresbrook managed to win the match with three balls to spare.  Scintilla’s T20 Captain Ekram Chowdhury having won the toss did not hesitate to opt for batting and proved to be a good decision.  Openers Aqib Ejaz (17) and Hasan Choudhury (16) took the score to 36 after only 3 overs however; Goresbrook CC made up of young players stayed focused in their game and managed to hang to their catches to put a break on Scintilla’s rapid run rate.   With the loss of the openers Scintilla were on the back which resulted a slower run rate but still at a steady rate at 6 runs an over.  Eventually Scintilla finished their innings on 126 for 8 after their allotted 20 overs.  Goresbrook in their reply started steadily scoring at the required rate however at times pegged back by Scintilla bowlers namely Rafiur Rahman and Abul Hasib.  Requiring 10 an over Goresbrook managed not to increase the rate and in the final two overs managed to pick up the speed and ended as the winner with 3 balls to spare.  Losing Captain Ekram Chowdhury said “it is very difficult loosing any finals and especially getting to the final over there was always a hope but Goresbrook batsman stayed calm under pressure and pick up runs at a steady pace.  I thought we missed out on at least 15-20 runs where my batsman did not pick up singles and doubles.  The lads were very tired after a month of fasting (due to Ramadan) and to play two back to back matches it took its toll on them.  Goresbrook team is made up of young and energetic players had a slight edge over us in the fitness department.  Nevertheless, we proved to be a worthy finalist and next year we hope to do even better.  I would like to thank our club management committee and senior players for their contribution in this match as well as throughout the season”.

What next for Scintilla CC

Scintilla CC 1st XI will be playing in ECCL Premier League next year with the hope of creating a 2nd XI to play either ECCL or Sunday League.  Therefore, all those who are interested to joining one of the most successful cricket clubs in East London are requested to visit www.scintillacc.co.uk to register.

The club is currently working with Eastbury Secondary School to set up a cricket academy with the aim of recruiting five talented players from each year group with a maximum of 25 members.  These young scintillians will train during the winter months with the view to playing competitive age group cricket in 2012.  It is expected that some of these youngsters will be able play for the club’s senior 2nd XI next season.  Scintilla will be looking to train up some their existing senior team players to become coaches so that they can help with the youth team coaching and player development.
